Purpose of
the Study
Subjects with cancer are routinely treated with chemotherapy. Although the chemotherapy may be useful in treating cancer, a side effect can be a decrease in the number of red blood cells (RBC) in the patient's blood. RBCs are cells in the blood that help the blood carry oxygen to different parts of the body. This decrease in the numbers of RBCs in one's body is known as anemia. Anemia may result in symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, pale skin, and heart pounding. Anemia can also reduce the amount of energy you have.
The cycle ergometer test is the standard way of measuring the amount of energy one has. However, the cycle test is harder to use with large numbers of people. The results of this study will help us find out if a simpler, easier to administer step test provides us with information as medically reliable as the cycle test.
